Deborah Backiel

Hometown

I’ve been in Melbourne, FL since 1989. I spent my early years in Long Island, NY.

Current Studies

I have a BBA in Marketing from Hofstra University and am now obtaining an MBA from UCF in a PMBA program.

Writing and Reading

I’m an avid reader and usually look for literary challenge or stimulation in my choices.  The PMBA program is putting time pressure on my leisure reading so my bedside works-in-progress are limited to two: Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake.  Otherwise, I have my nose in the WSJ, Economist, and an occasional HBR.

My work has given me great writing opportunities. I’ve written a machine manual, testimony for a Congressional Subcommittee hearing, press releases, human interest articles for monthly periodicals, corporate service standards and promotional support pieces.

Deborah on Writing

There’s nothing more inspiring for me than to be exposed to another’s perspective; and this includes reading someone else’s work. Starting with an open mind, I let the writer paint a background of a subject and fill in the details. I try to leave my experience and judgment behind so I can identify gaps, voids and opportunities in the piece for the author to clarify, strengthen or convince.
