Who Works in the UWC?

Consultants are students (graduate and undergraduate) from across UCF who have been recommended by faculty and who maintain a high grade point average.

All consultants receive training in composition—including rhetorical analysis, writing process research, collaborative pedagogy, and interdisciplinary writing.

Consultants partipate in many activities including giving presentations about the UWC, leading special topic workshops, working with small group projects, and developing pedagogical or publicity materials.

Consultants attend initial training when first hired and weekly seminars throughout the semester. Participation in an online discussion and occasional professional development projects are also required.

Consultants must have good communication skills and be interested in learning more about writing. Consultants must think critically, ask good questions, and demonstrate a sincere interest in the writing of other students.

Because the UWC is not a remedial service, consultants work with students at all levels in all disciplines.

Prerequisites for Writing Consultants:

Helping clients is the main goal of the UWC. Therefore, consultants may not be perfect writers with an encyclopedic knowledge of grammar. Good writers with excellent interpersonal skills are preferred over fabulous writers who will condescend to our clientele.
