What is the Purpose of the University Writing Center?

The University Writing Center is designed to help foster the community of scholarship and shared leadership at UCF through peer consulting, a form of collaborative learning which involves students in each other’s intellectual and academic development.

Peer consulting applies two well-known educational principles:

1. We sometimes learn things from each other that resist the direct instruction of classroom teachers.

2.When we teach others, we sometimes learn more than those we teach.

In the UWC, writers help each other analyze the rhetorical demands of a writing task; understand the material to be written; plan, organize, revise, and edit papers; design oral presentations; overcome writer’s block, and develop critical thinking skills. Students create a committed and caring writer’s community in the UWC, which helps them achieve excellence in their writing both in and out of class.
